Elephants sleep on the ground directly. Lying down on the ground, they sleep on their sides. They may lie on one side for 30 minutes, get up and probably eat, and then lie on the other side for another 30 minutes. Elephants are big animals, and their colossal weight can be a cause of discomfort if they sleep on one side for a long time. So they regularly change their sleeping sides.
Elephants are light sleepers, for they are always on the lookout against predators. They usually have a maximum of four hours of sleep every day/night. They do not sleep together and they do not sleep at the same time.
