Every year in the United States, more than a thousand people get struck by lightning. Out of these cases, more than a hundred die as a result of the lightning strike.
So how do you avoid getting strike?
Look for an appropriate shelter in a building or a car. Avoid taking shelter under trees. Trees in fact attract lightning. Put your feet as close together and crouch down with your head as low as possible but not touching the ground: you only want one contact point with the ground. Never lay down on the ground too; you do not want the current to be able to pass through your body.
If you are inside your house or a building, stay off the phone. If you need to call someone, use a cordless phone or cell phone.
