What does the rose usually symbolize?

RosesYes, roses are among the most expensive flowers for sale. But if you are courting somebody and professing your love to that person, you better make sure you bring a rose, or better yet, a bouquet of roses.

Even in ancient times, red or pink roses are symbols of love. Historically, ancient Greeks and Romans identified the rose with the goddess of love, Aphrodite (Greek name) and Venus (Roman name).

Medieval Christians identified the five petals of the rose with the five wounds of Christ. Roses also became associated with the Virgin Mary. The red rose was soon adopted as a symbol of the blood of the Christian martyrs.

A bouquet of red roses, often used to show love, is used as a Valentine’s Day gift in many countries.
